Google filed a lawsuit against two developers. These developers uploaded approximately 90 fraudulent crypto investment apps on Google Play and used these apps to defraud victims. Google stated that this fraud scheme affected approximately 100,000 users.
Chinese online app developers named Yunfeng Sun and Hongnam Cheung used three main methods to persuade victims to download their fake apps from Google Play. One app was a crypto exchange called TionRT, which was uploaded to Google Play in July 2022. However, victims became aware of the fraudulent cryptocurrency exchange when they were unable to withdraw more money.
Scammers used online videos and affiliate marketing programs to convince investors that the crypto and investing apps on Google Play were real. They also promised high returns to the victims. Google described these financial gains as "fictitious."
Google stated that approximately 100,000 users downloaded the fake apps, 8,700 of which were in the United States. Google stated that the fraudsters' actions affected its users' trust in its services and platforms, and that it itself was affected by the fraud scheme.
Google alleges that Sun, Cheung and their associates committed wire fraud, breached various contracts and violated the RICO Act. Therefore, the firm is seeking a permanent ban to prevent Sun, Cheung and their associates from accessing Google services, creating or maintaining any Google accounts, or using the company's products to promote any website, application or product.
